History of the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence

The proclamation of Indonesian independence was an important event that marked the end of the Dutch and Japanese colonialism over Indonesia. This event was the beginning of the Indonesian nation’s struggle to maintain its independence.

The first sign of the proclamation began on August 14, 1945, when Soekarno and Hatta met Rear Admiral Maeda, a high-ranking Japanese officer who was sympathetic to the Indonesian independence movement.

At that time, Maeda suggested that Soekarno and Hatta immediately proclaim Indonesian independence before the arrival of the Allied troops. On August 16, 1945, Soekarno and Hatta were kidnapped by a group of youths known as the pioneers.
