For the “Week of the Italian language in the world”, the film born from the collaboration between the Petuzzelli Theater of Bari, Iulm University, promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid
Dante’s otherworldly journey retraced through the masterpieces of music that, over the centuries, have told him. It’s the movie Dante in music, born from a collaboration between the Petuzzelli Theater of Bari, Iulm University and promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid. The film will premiere on Monday 18 October at 8 pm on Italiana (italiana.esteri.it), as well as on the YouTube and Vimeo channels of the Iic in Madrid.
The initiative falls among the events of the XXI edition of the “Week of the Italian language in the world”, international promotional exhibition held from 18 to 24 October. The week was born from a collaboration between the Accademia della Crusca and the Farnesina (all the offices of the diplomatic network and the cultural institutes involved), with the participation of the ministries of culture, universities and research, but also of the Swiss government and of other subjects engaged in linguistic promotion.
This year – and it could not have been otherwise – the initiatives are dedicated to “Dante, the Italian”, the ideal conclusion to the celebrations for Dante’s eighteenth century. The film Dante in music retraces, with the actor Giorgio Colangeli acting as a red thread, the Italian and international music that celebrated the Supreme Poet. The scenario is that – unusual – of the city of Bari: it is the Petruzzelli Theater that has taken care of the critical and musical choice; direction and editing are entrusted to IULM. The Foreign Ministry will broadcast the film internationally (the film is subtitled in English and Spanish). They range from Paolo and Francesca played by Donizetti, Zandonai, Puccini or Rossini to the Pia de ‘Tolomei by Donizetti himself. Other Dante writings in music will be explored, such as the New life of Castelnuovo Tedesco and Taneyev.
Many other Dante initiatives around the world organized on the occasion of the Language week. In New York, for example, there will be online meetings, the screening of the video Dante in Verona and the video of Riccardo Muti’s concert dedicated to the Poet between Florence, Verona and Ravenna. The augmented reality trip will be hosted in Santiago de Chile Inferno 5, while at the Finis Terrae Theater it goes on stage Inferno, co-produced by the theater and the Institute of Culture. Finally, in Dakar, Senegal, the translation into the local Wolof language of the first song of the Comedy, a production commissioned by the Italian Cultural Institute in Dakar and produced by the writer Pap Khouma; also the writer Cheikh Tidiane Gaye at the presentation.
