In the village of Likir, in Ladakh, in the northwest of India, songs accompany domestic activities. Each turn of the butter churn is taken up and counted as a chorus, the same melody is whispered in the cow’s ear to soothe it when milk is drawn from it, a lullaby is hummed at nightfall to put the child to sleep.
