The Spanish Prime Minister asks the EU to reconsider the tariff against Chinese e-cars

“I have to say honestly and openly that all of us, not only the member states, but also the European Commission, should rethink their position on this matter”

– said Sánchez about the customs on Wednesday at the event held in the Mondragon industrial park in Kunsan, eastern China.

“As I said before, we don’t need another war, in this case a trade war, and I think we need to build bridges between the European Union and China and Spain,” he stressed, adding that the Spanish side would be constructive and try to find a compromise to be found between the two economic superpowers.

“The Spanish government wants to consolidate the growth of trade relations and investment with China, focusing on green and innovative industries and avoiding the damage caused by trade and geopolitical tensions,” he said.

Sánchez arrived in Beijing on Sunday, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang, with whom they discussed, among other things, the resolution of trade tensions between the European Union and China.

China’s president asked Sánchez on Tuesday for Spain to play a constructive role in improving strained trade ties after the European Commission announced its decision in July to impose tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) from China.

The official announcement came after Beijing launched an anti-dumping investigation into pork imported from the European Union in June in response to the EU decision. In August, it also started an additional investigation against the EU’s subsidies for dairy products.
