Whale watching is now common on the Basque coast. However, one of the images from this summer has managed to capture a unique moment. A beaked whale tries to revive its calf a few miles from Santurce, in Vizcaya.
The fact has reached the international scientific community. Several magazines from other countries have published photographs of the animal, since such a sighting had never been achieved before. The beaked whale tries to keep its calf alive, although it already knows that it is dead, as commented by Gorka Ocio, head of ‘Verballenas.com’.

“She doesn’t recognize that the calf has died, so she is continually trying to resuscitate it, make it stand upright, hit it with its head and beak, trying to turn it over,” he says.
The spectators of this magical moment were amazed to see how the animal fights for the life of its daughter. “There it is, there it is!” some shouted.
Gorka Ocio has been organizing whale watching on the Basque coast for years. He says that it is something very complicated sometimes due to the storm. For this reason, “they are only made four times a year.” The initiative of this cetacean expert attempts to give a boost to the marine biodiversity that underlies the entire Cantabrian Coast.
“The whales are seen here all year round, but we are in the Cantabrian Sea, that’s why we go out from July to October,” he says.
This unrepeatable fact further proclaims the success of whale watching in the waters of the northern peninsula. In recent months this form of ecotourism has achieved 100% results.
Furthermore, not only this type of cetaceans can be observed in this area. Also on the high seas you can enjoy watching seabirds and dolphins. The leaders of this project assure that it is “an adrenaline rush” to be next to one of the largest and most emblematic animals on the planet “in a peaceful and majestic way.”
Whale sightings off the coast of Barcelona
Although whale watching is usually more common on the Basque coast, six white whales were also seen on the Costa Brava just a few months ago. Among them was a female and her calf, something unusual when the latter had not been observed there since 2017.
