An unusual event has occurred in Cáceres, nothing more and nothing less than a aurora borealis has been seen in the sky of the Spanish city. The northern lights are luminous phenomena that can be seen in the sky -at night- they are trails of light that can be of different colors. These phenomena are usually seen in polar areas and for this reason, it has been shocking that they have been able to see them outside their ‘habitat’.

Strange but possible events

Quite exceptionally, northern lights can be seen in other parts of the planet. That is what has happened in the Extremaduran town of Marry of Caceres, in which the photographer Lorenzo Cordero has managed to immortalize the photographing of an incredible red aurora borealis in the sky of Cáceres. A beautiful and surprising image that NASA has selected as the ‘photo of the day’ on their social networks. NASA, for its part, assures that these phenomena are due to the unusual activity that the Sun is presenting, so more northern lights could be seen to the south than usual.

an unusual image

The photographer Lorenzo Cordero announced on networks that his photograph has been chosen by NASA as ‘the image of the day’. Lorenzo has indicated that “it Reports of Northern Lights have been reported at unusual latitudes”, as in the states of Texas and Arizona in the United States, in which “a huge auroral oval” has taken place that has also spread to America, Europe and Asia. In addition, the photographer is a member of the astronomical association ‘El Cielo de Cáceres’.

It is the second time that a photography from Extremadura is recognized by NASA after the one carried out by Javier Caldera and Miguel Gracia of the ZTF comet in Cáceres in January of this year.

Rare Northern Lights

In Scotland, adversely appeared another aurora borealis after a solar storm, the atmospheric spectacle appeared much further south than usual. The sky turned green and purple. In addition, solar flares are responsible for this phenomenon that usually occurs from March to October, although it can also commonly occur at other times of the year when the atmospheric temperature is low enough. The Space Agency recommends that in order to fully see an aurora borealis, it is important to choose a good viewing site that is away from city lights, since low-intensity auroras can be invisible in areas where there are many artificial lights.
