The Speech from the Throne carries a multidimensional vision of water security in Morocco (Expert)

by times news cr

In a statement to MAP, Mr. El Mandour explained that the Royal Speech mentioned four main axes that constitute the basis of the integrated national vision for improving the water situation in Morocco, namely water transfer projects from hydraulic basins, the construction of dams, the desalination of sea water, and awareness of the importance of rational management of water resources.

In this regard, he noted that His Majesty the King called for the acceleration of the implementation of major water transfer projects in hydraulic basins, which will provide significant quantities of drinking and irrigation water, particularly in areas affected by drought over the past six years.

Mr. El Mandour also stressed that the construction of dams is an effective solution for supplying water to irrigated agricultural areas, noting that the Rif, North and High and Middle Atlas regions have an ideal location for the construction of dams, as they experience significant rainfall at certain times of the year, resulting in a surplus of exploitable water.

On the other hand, the expert stressed the importance of the seawater desalination strategy adopted by Morocco, and that the Sovereign called for accelerating its pace, highlighting the growing importance of this strategy adopted by Morocco about forty years ago, and its role in the supply of drinking water and irrigation, particularly in densely populated coastal cities which are experiencing a growing demand for water.

And to note that His Majesty the King paid, in the Speech from the Throne, great attention to the rationalization of water use, a national responsibility that falls to all institutions, actors and citizens, stressing that the fight against water waste is the responsibility of all, whether at the level of households, public baths, green spaces, farms and other facilities that consume large quantities of water.

Mr. El Mandour concluded that adopting a comprehensive approach combining these elements will help to resolve the problem of water scarcity, and ensure the abundance of this vital resource for future generations.
