On September 23 of this year, the SRS began to gradually address those people (private individuals) who, according to the data analysis conducted by the SRS, have significant discrepancies between their officially declared income and the information provided by the banks about the turnover of their bank accounts.

When receiving letters, citizens’ interest and response is very high, so the SRS has collected the most frequently asked questions and offers answers to them both on its website and on other information channels.

Representatives of the SRS inform that not only those people who have received letters from the SRS, but also those who have received information about such activity of the SRS are interested in the possibilities of correctly declaring their income.

The most frequently asked questions are basically related to what to do when receiving such a letter, how extensive information about a person’s income and cash flow in their bank accounts is already available to the SRS, why such letters are also received by Latvian nationals living abroad for a long time. Answers to the most frequently asked questions are posted on the website “www.vid.gov.lv” in the section “SRS letters: questions and answers” and on the SRS accounts on the social platforms “Facebook” and “X”.

A guide prepared by the SRS is also available on the website, which explains step by step what income must be declared and in which cases personal income tax is or is not payable on it, as well as how to do it correctly. Such a guide is also attached to all sent letters.

Therefore, the SRS invites everyone who has received such a letter from the SRS not to be alarmed, first calmly get acquainted with this guide and act according to the specific situation – to provide an explanation in a free form in the SRS electronic declaration system (EDS) or to submit an annual income declaration. And only in specific, unclear cases it is necessary to contact and consult with the SRS.

The SRS will gradually evaluate the information provided by the citizens, and only in case of necessity, if there are any additional questions or uncertainties, will the person be contacted in the SRS EDS to clarify the submitted information or obtain additional information.

Until now, letters have been sent electronically, EDS, but in the future it is planned to send them also by post to the person’s declared place of residence, if the person is not an EDS user.

These letters are sent to those people who, as a result of a thorough data analysis, have been found to have the greatest discrepancies, that is, the difference between the turnover of their bank accounts and the declared income is at least 20,000 euros or more.

The purpose of the letters is to draw people’s attention to the possible risk of non-payment of taxes (undeclared income), inviting them to evaluate the amounts of money received in the accounts and to declare previously undeclared income, if such is found, or to provide a reasonable explanation of the reasons for this cash flow.
