No one can forget the green-eyed girl who was photographed by Steve McCurry on camera in 1984 and appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine. That stare that gave pain and wonder to the world. Sharbat Gula will now live in Italy. The Italian prime minister’s office said Sharbat was seeking help to leave the country after the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan. The government will provide all assistance to start a new life in Italy.
The world came to know Sharbat through McCurry’s photo. I was 12 years old then. Sharbat, who returned to Kabul after a brief stay in Pakistan, was given a home by the then Afghan government.
