Through a statement and due to the heavy rains that have been recorded, the Ministry of Education reported the postponement of the start of the school year in Metropolitan Lima and the Lima region.

The Minister of Education, Óscar Becerra, pointed out that they do not want to “create panic” in the face of heavy rains but rather want to “be cautious” since generally “we react after the emergency occurs.”

The decision was made in consultation with the Constitutional President of the Republic, with the Prime Minister, with the Senamhi team and with the management team of the Ministry of Education.

Now the classes would start on March 20, although it is still not certain since Senamhi is still evaluating the effects of Cyclone Yaku in Lima.

With this measure, Lima now joins other regions such as Tumbes, Piura and Lambayeque that have been affected by the Yaku cycle and in which school classes will not begin.

In the statement issued by the Ministry, it is stated that “The authorities of the Education sector will be in permanent evaluation of the educational premises, in coordination with the Civil Defense authorities, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and local governments.”
