The US believes that UN peacekeepers will be required to maintain a buffer zone on the border between Lebanon and Israel after the completion of Israeli operations against Hezbollah.
As Day.Az reports, this statement was made by the head of the press service of the US State Department Matthew Miller at the next briefing.
He expressed the hope that after the Israeli army ousts Hezbollah from the border areas, UNIFIL (UN Interim Force in Lebanon) forces and the Lebanese army will take positions to control the buffer zone on the border. “We want UNIFIL to carry out its mission to maintain security,” Miller said, clarifying that the decision on the further actions of peacekeepers should be made by them, not the United States.
He added that the US does not want UN peacekeepers to come under fire from Israeli forces and that its mission should be to prevent Hezbollah from seizing southern Lebanese territory from where it has launched attacks on Israel in recent years. At the same time, Miller admitted that so far UNIFIL and the Lebanese army have not been able to effectively contain Hezbollah militants in the region.
