State Duma Deputy Ivan Sukharev proposed to introduce a discount on the transport tax for drivers with a safe driving style, reports RT, citing a copy of the deputy’s letter to the head of the traffic police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Mikhail Chernikov.

“In order to reduce the number of offenses on the roads, I ask you to evaluate the feasibility of introducing a privilege for drivers for a safe driving style,” the message says. In particular, Sukharev proposes to introduce a 50% discount on the payment of transport tax for drivers who have committed no more than three minor traffic violations during the tax period, the amount of the fine for each of which did not exceed 1,500 rubles.

In his appeal, the legislator noted that in 2020 more than 16,000 people died in road accidents in Russia, while the number of fines issued for traffic violations last year increased by 15% compared to 2019 and amounted to 167 million.

Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia proposed to work out measures to stimulate owners of cars and motorcycles to undergo technical inspection (MOT) of vehicles, which they plan to make voluntary. On July 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law according to which the owners of passenger cars are no longer required to undergo maintenance in order to obtain an MTPL policy.
