“We decided, with Philippe Vigier [ministre délégué chargé des outre-mer], to initiate the accelerated procedure for recognition of the state of natural disaster in Guadeloupe”, wrote on X (ex-Twitter) Gérald Darmanin. Recognition of the state of natural disaster allows victims to be compensated.

The Antilles department, whose approximately 380,000 inhabitants were confined for part of the day on Saturday during the passage of the hurricane, suffered heavy rains and flooding on Sunday but the only damage recorded was material, with no victims. ‘being to be deplored.

Philippe Vigier arrived Monday afternoon (evening in Paris) in Guadeloupe to establish an initial assessment of the damage. “There is no human drama, it’s already great. The drinking water network disrupted

The Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories wished “tell the residents” of the archipelago “the State does not abandon you, quite the contrary”he explained to the press after a meeting with the president of the Guadeloupe regional council, Ary Chalus, in Les Abymes.

The strong winds of the category 1 hurricane particularly affected the islands of Désirade and Marie-Galante. The entire meteorological episode disrupted the supply of drinking water and the supply of electricity, and damaged roads in places.

Several drinking water production plants were still shut down on Monday due to heavy rain and storms, said the joint union managing the Guadeloupe network. “As the drinking water network is disrupted and the quality of the water impacted, as with any bad weather, it is advisable not to consume the water while waiting for analyses” of the regional health agency (ARS), added the operator in a press release.
