by time news

Today, October 7, 2021, the statute of limitations for the murder of Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya expired. The publication itself drew attention to this. The conclusion follows from the article of the Criminal Code on the statute of limitations (78 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation): if 15 years have passed since the date of the commission of an especially grave crime, the perpetrator is released from liability. The person who ordered the murder of the journalist was never found.

Ms Politkovskaya was shot dead on 7 October 2006 at her home in Moscow. In this case, six people were convicted: the perpetrator, organizer and intermediaries in the commission of the crime. Among the convicts was a lieutenant colonel of the Moscow Interior Ministry, who promised to name those who ordered the murder, but never did so.

Novaya Gazeta announced that it would seek to reopen the investigation. Also today, the publication plans to release a film, which will lead the conclusions of its own investigation.

Anna Politkovskaya has repeatedly traveled to areas of hostilities, reported from Chechnya and was engaged in human rights activities. She helped the mothers of the dead soldiers and the victims of “Nord-Ost”. The journalist openly criticized the current government and personally President Vladimir Putin.
