Until Monday morning at 11 o’clock, the State Fire and Rescue Service received about 850 applications for liquidation of damage caused by strong wind and rain. At the same time, residents also turn to their municipalities for help.
In many places, electricity and water supplies have been interrupted or interrupted for residents and businesses, private houses, basements of multi-storey buildings, educational institutions, yards and streets have been flooded. Fallen trees not only blocked roads, but also damaged cars and roofs of buildings. In Riga, traffic lights and trolleybus cables have also been damaged.
For example, in Riga, a broken tree damaged the roof of the Riga State German Gymnasium. The roof was also damaged in the social care center “Stella maris”, while the basement of the boarding house “Mežciems” was flooded. A part of the roof structure is in danger of coming off in the Riga Doma. In many places in the city, falling trees have damaged the fences of educational institutions.
On the other hand, in the Jelgava region, the Zalenieki service hotel has no video surveillance system due to a water and electricity failure. Electrical damage was also detected in the regional social care center “Zemgale” and the social care and rehabilitation center “Kalnciems”. In Zalenieki Parish, a tree also fell on the roof of the Restaurateur’s House.
The fallen trees also damaged the fence of the “Kamenīte” pre-school educational institution in Eleja and the roof of the Ozolnieki High School gymnasium.
At Vircavas primary school, due to the heavy rain, pumping works are underway, freeing the lower floor of the school from water. Due to the water flowing past the ventilation hatches, flooded rooms were found in several educational institutions.
Water has damaged the suspended ceiling in Ānes pre-school educational institution “Saulīte”, Vilce and Svēte elementary schools. The basement and courtyard of the elementary school in Tetele were flooded, and the window in the computer room of the school was broken during the storm, damaging the four computers near the window.
Likewise, both entrances to the Ozolnieki preschool educational institution “Pūcīte”, Rīgas street 29, were flooded.
In Platone Parish, after the pond in the backyard flooded, which blocked the access road to a residential house, help was provided to a specific family.
In Platone, Valgunde and Gluda parishes, the rivers also overflowed their banks. Floods are also observed in Ozolnieku Parish – several ditches flooded, flooding private properties, the embankment of Iecava also flooded.
The strong storm has caused serious, considerable damage to the JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” nature park in Tērvete, therefore the park is closed to visitors until the damage is assessed and the dangerous trees are removed.
Due to the damage of the storm, the nearby sights are also closed – the obstacle course “Tērvete tarzāns”, the family recreation area “Tērvete nettu park” and “Anneles animal garden”.
