Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan were once the most popular actors in Bollywood. While all other actors wanted to share the screen with Bachchan to boost their career graph, Sridevi who wanted to be a part of female-centric films hesitated to appear as a second runner-up in a Bachchan-starrer film. Hence, it took a truckload of roses for Bachchan to convince Sridevi to share the screen with him in the 1992 film Khuda Gaava.
In Satyarth Nayak’s book ‘Sridevi: The Eternal Screen Gods’, the late choreographer Saroj Khan, who worked with Sridevi in a song sequence, shares his experience in this regard. Saroj Khan says that the scene where a truck full of roses sent by Amitabh Bachchan falls on top of Sridevi was amazing.
“We were shooting a song when the truck came. They stopped Sridevi near the truck. The roses in the truck showered on Sridevi. It was a beautiful visual.” Bachchan’s performance influenced Sridevi, but Sridevi was still not convinced that she had anything to do in the film. Sridevi made a condition that she would act as Bachchan’s wife and daughter in a film. Filmmakers Manoj Desai and Mukul Anand gave in to Sridevi’s condition. Khuda Gaa, which starred Sridevi and Bachchan together, became one of the biggest hits in the duo’s filmography.
Even the chartbuster song “Jumma Chumma” was supposed to be a part of the film. Revealing the location of the song in the film, Saroj Khan shared in the book, “Amitabh was a cop who caught pickpocket Sridevi red-handed. When she asks what bribe he can give her, he asks for a chumma.
Even before Khuda Gawa, Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan had signed Ramesh Sippy’s Ram Ki Seetha Shyam Ki Geetha, in which they played dual roles. But unfortunately the film was boxed and didn’t hit the theatres. Even the song “Jumma Chumma” was supposed to be a part of the film. “Bachchan was a policeman who caught pickpocket Sridevi red-handed. When asked what kind of bribe Sridevi wanted, Bachchan would ask an umma,” said Saroj Khan, revealing the song’s place in the film. The song was later included in the 1991 film Hum, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Kimi Katkar.
Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi last appeared together on screen in Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish, released in 2012. Amitabh Bachchan appeared in a cameo role in the film.
