Amir Khan turned down a valuable opportunity to win a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics for USD 5,000 or approximately Rp. 77 million. He actually gave money to Mario Kindelan for free.

Amir Khan told this sad story when he met Kindelan in Bahrain, recently. During the meeting, the boxer from Cuba offered him a gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics for USD 5,000.

The reason the boxer sold his valuable medal was to finance the construction of a house for his mother in Cuba. But Amir Khan actually rejected it.

Amir Khan actually gave money to Kindelan. The reason was because during that meeting he felt touched by the boxer who had beaten him in the final of the lightweight division at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

“I just met Mario and talked to him. He told me a story; he wanted to build a house in his country, Cuba, and wanted to sell the 2004 Athens Olympic gold medal that I got from beating me,” he said as quoted by the Daily Star, Monday (4 /12/2023).

“So I will give him $5,000 to build his house, this is not a publicity stunt, it touches my heart. How desperate he is, he wants to give away his Olympic gold medal. That touches my heart and that’s the reason I will give him that money. I will give you money for your mother’s house but you have to keep the gold medal.”
