Guirec Soudée was an adventurer par excellence. He loved to travel, visit every corner of the planet and leave no corner that he had not seen in the world. This French athlete broke all the rules when choosing his traveling companion, since he was not traveling alone, and, surprisingly, it was a chicken that he collected in the Canary Islands and which he named Monique.

It was in 2014 when he designated her as his official traveling companion on his journey through the seas of the world on his sailboat. Thus, from these Spanish islands, she moved along the west coast of Africa until reaching the Caribbean. From there, she embarked on a journey to the Arctic, where Monique surprised the world and survived the extreme cold. In Greenland, the inhabitants were impressed, since chickens or other domestic birds do not exist on the polar island, but Monique was the exception.

“Monique doesn’t complain about anything,” he told local media. And it was five years of endless travel, where Guirec realized the environmental problem the world was facing. Thus, she created an association for the protection of the seas and wrote two books in which, of course, she remembered her companion. These are ‘Guirec et Monique’ and ‘La fabuleuse histoire de Guirec et Monique’.

But a few months ago, this peculiar adventure couple had to separate due to Monique’s death. The young man published on the social network Facebook some nice words dedicated to his adventure partner, who lately was more tired and had less energy.

”Without you I would have gone crazy in the Greenland winter, without sun for 70 days, without human contact for 130 days,” says Guirec. ”I didn’t know how to fish, but you continued laying eggs every day,” says the young man. Now Guirec will continue traveling, although he will surely miss his peculiar companion.
