The author of the bizarre story that we are going to tell you in the podcast, in the purest ‘First Dates’ style, was Ernesto Giménez Caballero. It would be a “traditional and revolutionary” wedding, as the writer, fascism theorist and ambassador of Spain during the Franco dictatorship described it. The contracting parties, none other than Hitler and the founder of the Feminine Section of the Falange, Pilar Primo de Rivera. Her plan obsessed him so much that she even traveled to Germany and visited the Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, at his home.
The idea was born in 1938, when Giménez Caballero read in the women’s magazine ‘Y’ the details of the first trip that Pilar Primo de Rivera made to Berlin to meet the ‘Führer’: «Hitler has given the high honor of receiving and speaking at length with our national delegate of the women’s sections […]. In addition, Primo de Rivera received a gift from Hitler: a magnificent vase with red and yellow flowers and something that the foreign minister gives very difficultly, a portrait with an expressive dedication and a silver frame. The trip has been an important expression of Spanish-German friendship.
For three years, his idea took shape in his head, until, in 1941, he read in the press that Pilar Primo de Rivera had traveled to Germany again and he did not doubt that he had to put it into operation. In December, he took advantage of a trip to the city of Weimar, where he had been invited by the European Association of Writers chaired by Goebbels and stood there with a cloak and a Christmas Nativity scene made in Murcia as gifts, to try to convince the propaganda minister and approach the details.
And this is history…
