“Carthage”, the Israeli period drama that premiered this month on Kan 11, tells the story of a detention camp established in the 1940s in the Sudanese desert, where opponents of British rule were imprisoned. Among its residents were the fighters of the Etzel and Lehi undergrounds who operated in Palestine before the establishment of the state alongside Nazi prisoners from World War II and their Italian allies. After watching four of the eleven episodes of the season, it can already be said that this is currently one of the most interesting series on television.

Plot summary

In 1942, the comedian Eliyahu (Elijah) Levy, the star of the satirical theater “The Broom” in Tel Aviv, arrives at “Carthage”, a detention camp in Sudan, accused of attempting to assassinate a senior British officer and his wife. Elijah denies anything to do with the incident, except that once the gates of Carthage are locked behind him – no one can help him. He tries to gain the trust of the Lehi fighters, who believe that he was spying on their friends, to create a position for himself after he understood the order of the forces in the camp, and to keep secret the affair with his lover, who by chance – or not by chance – is in the camp with him. The series also follows Thomas Edinburgh ( Oliver Beckner), a former fighter pilot in the British Air Force, accused of spying for the Nazis, and Lady Helena Davidson, the beautiful wife of the camp director, Commodore Lord James Davidson.

The context for reality

Carthage was not the only concentration camp in Africa. The British also built the camp “Sambal” in Eritrea and “Gilgil” in Kenya, in response to the violent actions of the Jews in Palestine. The Jewish community followed the distant detainees with concern, and complained to the government about the poor conditions in the camps, the lack of food and the difficulty in keeping kosher. According to the Lehi website, 439 detainees were deported to Africa, of which 262 were returned to Israel after the British left the country. Among the well-known names who were detained in camps in Africa: former Prime Minister of Israel and member of the Lehi underground, Yitzhak Shamir, who escaped from the Asmara camp in 1947 “In Eritrea through a tunnel that was not properly blocked; The President of the Supreme Court and a member of the Echelon Meir Shamgar, who studied law by correspondence from the Sambal camp, and the Minister of the Economy and the commander of the Echelon Yaakov Meridor, who escaped with Shamir from Asmara, and expanded on the event in his book “The Long Road to Freedom”.

Although the series is based on a real scene, the Carthage camp in Sudan, most sources do not mention Nazi or Italian detainees, as shown in the series. The creators of “Carthage” told in interviews with them that they were based on a memoir of one of the camp detainees.

3 things you should know

● Eliyahu Levy, the name of the hero of “Carthage”, is also the name of an underground fighter of the Lehi and the late father of two of the creators of the series – Reshef Vinz Levy. Reshef Levy immortalized his father in another of his works, the movie “Hunting Elephants” (2013): For Grandpa The hero of the film (played by Sasson Gabay) is called Eliyahu.

● Sean Paul McGrath, an Irish actor who lives in London and plays Archibald MacDonald, a violent warden and deputy commander of the camp in the series, is a high school drama teacher. In an interview with him in “Pro Media Magazine” he said that only during vacations and holidays is he freed up for his film projects.

● In 1948, shortly before their release, the detainees of the Gilgil camp in Kenya gathered all their records from their stay in the camp into a book in a volume called “The Book of Arrest and Exile (Three Years of Our Exile)”. All 439 residents of the camp contributed to the book excerpts from diaries, statistical records, poems and illustrations, letters and jokes about their situation. The book is preserved in two original copies in the National Library in Jerusalem to this day.

Why did we choose her?

So far the series has received mixed reviews and nevertheless, “Carthage” is successful in many aspects: the photo set is elaborate (it was specially built in the forests of Colombia), the techniques and camera angles are spectacular, the actors are excellent and Levy’s writing is full of black and sarcastic humor. All these make Carthage a series that is hard to take your eyes off of.
