Centennial Photo No. 73
Did you know that there used to be a swimming pool in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, famous for its high-class hanoks and cafe streets? A photo from 100 years ago captures children splashing in the water, a scene as captivating today as it was then.
Samcheong-dong has captivated people for generations. Ancient scholars like Seong Hyeon recognized its beauty, describing it as the perfect place to play. The area was a popular dating spot in the Japanese colonial period, with people enjoying the natural waters of the Samcheong-dongcheon stream.
However, the history of Samcheong-dong Swimming Pool is not without dark chapters. News articles from the early 20th century reveal tragic drowning incidents, reminding us of the inherent dangers of the natural waters.
Despite these risks, plans to create a swimming pool in Samcheong-dong emerged in the 1930s. The project faced challenges, but eventually materialized in 1987 with the construction of a military swimming pool. This pool, however, was later closed to the public.
While swimming in Samcheong-dong Valley is no longer a common pastime, its history remains vivid. The area is now primarily used for hiking and enjoying the natural surroundings.
