Vienna. Many residents of Simmeringer Hauptstraße in Vienna’s 11th district criticize the monotony of the shops and service providers operating there. So why are there so many hairdressers on this street? Krone Newspaper asked this question and conveyed the news to its readers as follows:

“Simmeringer Hauptstraße was once full of many different shops. But with the advent of large fashion chains and shopping malls, customers stopped coming. As a result, the vacant shops were rented again.

According to increasing criticism, too many shops in the same sector began to open. There are twelve hairdressers or barber shops along Simmeringer Hauptstraße for just over a kilometer. There are also many kiosks and mobile phone shops.

Speaking to Krone, residents of the district explain their thoughts on the latest situation as follows:

“I love being here and I’m happy there are so many hairdressers, but I want more fashion shops.” Dactanian, IT industry (24)

“I was born here. A lot has changed. But I can get everything I need.” Christl, retired (79)

“There is nothing left here. But it’s the customers’ own fault if they go to shopping malls.” Walter, retired (74)

“Just more hairdressers and kiosks. “The regional administration does nothing.” Helmut, retired (80)

No mastery exam required

But why? There is no need for a master’s exam to open a barber shop, you just need a general manager in accordance with the commercial law. In addition, individual chairs can be rented on a daily basis to barbers or hairdressers on a non-permanent basis.

“I have never seen a district with so many hairdressers,” says a passerby. Some blame the regional manager, others blame the customers themselves.

There is no proposed regulation

According to the Chamber of Commerce, there are no regulations on how many service providers or merchants of one type can be located in an area. In the statement made by the office of Regional President Thomas Steinhart (SPÖ), it is said that there can be no intervention as the owners are allowed to rent privately to whomever they want.”
