A new study found that 40 percent of all cancers are linked to obesity, which once again proves the importance of staying in good physical shape.

Obesity is linked to 32 types of cancer

A study conducted at Lund University in Sweden included 4.1 million people who were followed for about 40 years, carefully checking their weight and lifestyle.

During this period, more than 332 thousand cancer cases.

It was noticed that 40 percent cases of cancer development can be linked to being overweight.

Overall, 32 types of cancer were found to be associated with obesity. So far, such a link has only been seen in 13 types of cancer, according to the authors.

The study, which will be presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice, confirms that obesity can be a cause of cancers, including breast, bowel, uterine and kidney cancers.

But what was new was that obesity can lead to 19 other cancers, including malignant melanoma, stomach, small intestine, head and neck cancer.

Cancer cases will increase

Professor Jason Halford, president of the European Association for Obesity Research, said the study was a strong, large-scale analysis.

“The study reveals what many researchers of cancer and obesity have suspected: obesity may be a risk factor for many types of cancer,” said Professor Halford.

As it shows calculations published in the journal The Lancetmore than a billion people worldwide suffer from obesity.

Of them, based on 2022 according to data, about 880 million are adults and 159 million children.

Lithuanian health indicators are not encouraging. in 2019 according to data, 57 percent the population’s body weight was too high, ie 38 percent. were overweight, and 19 percent were obese.

Doctors worry that obesity rates are heralding a new surge in cancer.

The simplest tool for determining obesity is the body mass index (BMI).

BMI is calculated by dividing weight (kg) twice by height (m). If you don’t like math, you can easily find a calculator online that will give you a BMI reading.

If the BMI is above 25, but below 30, a person is considered overweight. If the BMI is higher than 30, it is already obesity.

Is it worth counting calories?

In the fight against obesity, doctors emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It is recommended that adults make time for physical activity every day, including endurance exercise and cardio.

It is also recommended to reduce sitting time and to break up longer periods of immobility with some activity.

The ideal daily calorie intake depends on age, metabolism and physical activity level, among other factors. It is generally recommended to consume 2,000 kilocalories per day for women and 2,500 kilocalories for men.

It’s true, doctor of medical sciences, dietician doctor Edita Gavelienė lrytas.lt recently explained that counting calories doesn’t make sense for the vast majority of people.

“Calories have been known for a long time and people lived peacefully, did not count them and had no particular problems. Daily calorie counting is not necessary for every person. This is an indicator that specialists use to decide on a person’s situation, their needs, and if necessary, treatment,” said E.Gavelienė.

According to her, the best indication of calorie consumption is body mass dynamics. If the kilograms grow, it means that too much caloric food enters the stomach.
