The British Ambassador to Libya, Caroline Horland, said today, Saturday, that the success of the elections in Libya requires a broader political and social consensus on the main issues, in addition to the implementation of all laws.
The ambassador reiterated her support, and that of her country, for the initiative of the UN envoy, Abdullah Batili, regarding the elections.
And she said, via a tweet on Twitter: “I urge the Libyan leaders to deal with the Special Envoy in a constructive manner,” stressing that Britain fully supports the efforts of the UN envoy.
Today, Saturday, the UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, presented his initiative to hold elections this year, which he had previously presented on February 27 to the UN Security Council.
He said, in a press conference at the headquarters of the UN mission in the capital, Tripoli, that the political bodies currently present in Libya are the cause of the crisis, warning that prolonging the temporary situation and not holding elections will undermine security and peace and threaten the unity of the country.
He added that a roadmap for the elections could be drawn up by mid-June.
Batelli said that giving the Libyan people the opportunity to choose their leaders through elections will lead to peace and prosperity, and that elections are necessary to rebuild state institutions.
He added that the elections will give legitimacy to the country’s institutions, noting that if the political will is available to the State Council and the House of Representatives, then it is possible to hold elections this year.
Batili considered that his initiative is in line with the vision for Libya, for “a new, independent, peaceful, prosperous Libya, a land of brotherhood, and a rising actor on the regional and international arena.”
