The Supreme Court (SC) refused to transfer for cassation consideration the complaint of the head of the Karelian branch of the human rights center “Memorial” (included by the Ministry of Justice in the list of foreign agents), historian Yuri Dmitriev, follows from the court’s database.

“Refusal to transfer the case (cassation appeal, presentation) for consideration in the court session of the court of the cassation instance,” reads the case card. The cassation appeal was filed on October 4 and the next day forwarded to the judge.

The court in St. Petersburg upheld the sentence to the Karelian historian Dmitriev

Dmitriev is a Karelian historian who discovered several large graves of victims of Stalin’s repressions in the region in the early 1990s. At the Sandarmokh shooting range, according to various estimates, from 6 thousand to 9 thousand people were killed and buried. Dmitriev became the head of the regional branch of Memorial in 2014.

In 2016, a criminal case was opened against Dmitriev under Art. 135 of the Criminal Code (lecherous actions), art. 242.2 of the Criminal Code (use of a minor for the production of pornography), part 1 of Art. 222 of the Criminal Code (illegal possession of weapons) and clause “b” of Part 4 of Art. 132 of the Criminal Code (violent acts of a sexual nature). The investigation believes that the historian took nude photos of his underage stepdaughter and committed violent acts of a sexual nature over her.
