The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the verdict in the case of the murder of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and Novaya Gazeta journalist Anastasia Baburova. At the same time, Yevgenia Khasis, an accomplice in the murder, was reduced by a year from 18 to 17 years in the colony due to the expiration of the statute of limitations on charges of possession of weapons. The nationalists were sentenced to imprisonment in 2011.

“The petition of the defense to send the case for a new trial is denied. Reduce the punishment of the defendant Khasis for one year, and only up to 17 years in prison, ”TASS quotes the words of the judge. The perpetrator of the murder, Nikita Tikhonov, was left with a life sentence. The defense of the convicts, who believed that the jury considered the case with violations, asked for a review of the sentence. The jurors themselves, questioned during the meeting, refuted these suspicions.

In February 2021, the ECHR found violations in the trial in the case of Tikhonov and Khasis. The court considered that the members of the collegium could not be considered unbiased because they had read media reports about the crime. In July 2021, the ECtHR refused to review the decision on the biased verdict against the nationalists. Last December, the Supreme Court of Russia sent the case back for a new trial.
