The Supreme Court should consider; Sourav Ganguly to become ICC Chairman

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved the process to elect the next chairman of the apex body. The ICC has approved the election as the current chairman Greg Barclay’s term ends. Elections are also held in November.

Decide the winner on the basis of absolute majority. The tenure of the chair will be for two years from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2024.

The ICC has also removed the rule that two-thirds majority is required to become the chairman. If he gets 51 percent of the votes, he can lead the ICC.

Sportsstar reports that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is among the most likely to head the apex body of the ICC.

There are reports that Ganguly has the support of many countries and therefore it is likely that Ganguly will reach the position of chairman.

However, Ganguly’s future will be decided by the Supreme Court’s verdict. Ganguly and BCCI Secretary Jai Shah are currently in a cooling off period regarding the amendment of the BCCI constitution.

The board wants relaxation of the rule that one cannot hold office in the BCCI or the state association for three consecutive years.

Justice N.V. The bench headed by Ramana will hear the case on Thursday. Ganguly and Shah will have to step down if fate goes against them.

If the Supreme Court approves the constitutional amendment, both will be able to continue in key BCCI positions.

Before becoming the BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly was the secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal. After this, he served as the president of the association from 2015 to 2019.

After this, he took charge as the head of BCCI in October 2019.

Jai Shayawatte was the Joint Secretary of Gujarat Cricket Association since 2014. He is also currently the President of the Asian Cricket Council.
