With its small hooked legs and chubby body, the tardigrade has something “kawaii” (cute in Japanese). But like Pokémon, this microscopic animal has many powers. If it doesn’t spit flames or throw lightning, it is in fact extremely resistant. In particular, it is capable of surviving in a dehydrated form for decades and returning to life at the slightest trace of humidity. In this “cryptobiota” state, it endures extreme cold (over -250°C) as well as hellish heat (over 150°C), unbearable pressures that would cause steel to break or the vacuum of space.
