The suspension of air traffic at Munich airport due to heavy snowfall has caused the cancellation of 48 flights so far bound for different Spanish airports, including Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas, the airport manager Aena has reported.

The number of operations planned this Saturday from Munich airport to Spain amounts to 63, although Aena is still has not confirmed the cancellation of the rest of pending flights.

The flights whose cancellation has been confirmed originating in the Bavarian capital affect the airports of Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Tenerife South, Palma, Bilbao, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Valencia.

Munich Airport will remain closed for the time being until Sunday at 06:00 local time (04:00 GMT).

The storm of low temperatures and snowfall also affects airports in England and Scotland. Aena sources have told EFE that, unlike connections from Munich, they are not aware of any more canceled flights from other capitals.

Canceled matches

The heavy snowfalls have also forced cancel all Austrian Bundesliga matches scheduled for this Saturday. The three top-flight matches affected are WSG Tirol against Rapid Vienna, Red Bull Salzburg against WAC, and Austria Klagenfurt against Hartberg. In addition, the match between SCR Altach and Austria Lustenau scheduled for Sunday was also postponed.
