Stockholm, Sweden – The Sweden Democrats, led by Jimmie Åkesson, have faced growing criticism for their role in escalating the crisis surrounding the Koran burnings in Sweden over the past year. Disturbing comments made by SD Riksdag member Richard Jomshof in January 2023 only added to the controversy. Jomshof infamously stated, “if they get upset, then burn a hundred more,” referring to the Koran burnings. The fact that another Koran burner, Salwan Momika, is also a member of the Sweden Democrats underscores the party’s involvement in these acts.
As these events unfold, Sweden’s international reputation continues to suffer. Jomshof’s tweet about Islam and Muhammad not only hastily interrupted Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s vacation but also triggered negative reactions worldwide. Turkey’s President Erdogan expressed his displeasure, exacerbating tensions and straining Sweden’s relationship with NATO. Additionally, the British Foreign Office issued a warning about Sweden’s increasing vulnerability to terrorist attacks.
Five days after Jomshof’s inflammatory tweet, Prime Minister Kristersson and Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer were forced to hold a press conference addressing the security situation caused by the Sweden Democrats’ actions. The repercussions of their members’ Koran burnings, journalists’ campaigns, and parliamentarians’ tweets have been felt both domestically and internationally, with Swedish embassies being targeted and the terror threat level raised by the Security Police.
The situation has reached a critical point, as the Sweden Democrats’ actions continue to undermine the government’s policy and threaten the security of the kingdom. The party’s alignment with violent Islamists has not gone unnoticed, with critics suggesting that both groups depend on each other to grow and hold the rest of society hostage.
