The Swedish Armed Forces to introduce new firearms soon

A new procurement agreement between Sweden and Finland will supply firearms systems and associated technology over the next ten years. The agreement will create security of supply for both countries and improve interoperability by using the same type of weapons and ammunition. The 5.56×45 caliber automatic carbine, 7.62×51 caliber automatic carbine, 7.62×51 caliber sniper rifle, and 8.6 Lapua Magnum sniper rifle will be part of the new weapons developed. Testing will be extensive to ensure quality, handling and ergonomics are sufficient, with deliveries commencing in 2024 for the sniper system and followed by the introduction of other weapon types. This initial contract covers weapons worth approximately SEK 582 million. More information is available on the FMV’s website.

The agreement, which runs over ten years, is part of a Swedish-Finnish procurement of firearms systems with associated technology. The idea is to create security of supply for both countries and improve interoperability with the same type of weapons and ammunition.

The new weapons will be the 5.56×45 caliber automatic carbine, the 7.62×51 caliber automatic carbine, the 7.62×51 caliber sniper rifle and the 8.6 Lapua Magnum sniper rifle.

The introduction of the sniper system is estimated for 2024. The new automatic carbine in caliber 5.56 will start in 2025, then the other weapon types will follow.

Before deliveries begin, extensive tests are made of each weapon type, where quality, handling and ergonomics are tested under varying conditions.

The first contract covers weapons worth approximately SEK 582 million.
