Sweden’s defense commission said the country must respond to new conditions, citing heightened tensions in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Sweden’s recent integration into the NATO military alliance.
The commission recommended the training of personnel for additional army brigades and the navy, an increase in the number of conscripts trained annually from 8,000 to 12,000, and the creation of Sweden’s first rocket artillery unit.
“Together, the (recommended) additions to military defense amount to $52.8 billion. crores for the year 2030,” said the commission’s report submitted to the government on Friday.
The commission is made up of representatives from all parliamentary parties, as well as experts and representatives from various institutions, including the armed forces.
Its report will form the basis of a defense spending decision in parliament this autumn, which the commission says will be “historic”.
“The deteriorating security situation, together with Sweden’s obligations as an ally, requires greater ambitions for military defence,” the government’s website said on Friday.
