Rumour: The Switch Pro was real but has been cancelled, Digital Foundry claims

The Switch Pro was widely rumored not long ago as a mid-generation upgrade of the current Switch console, which launched in 2017.

Reports suggested that Nintendo was planning to release a more powerful version with an improved screen, but despite multiple sources seemingly confirming this – including developers who were apparently told about it – no Switch Pro arrived, and the arrival of an OLED edition seemed to indicate that another hardware update would not be on the way for a while What.

Now, the group behind Digital Foundry claims the system was in Nintendo’s plans at one point, but was eventually scrapped. Currently, there are no plans to release a stronger version of the Switch before its successor arrives.

This rumor has been confirmed to Digital Foundry by more than one unnamed developer.

As for Nintendo’s next console, Digital Foundry says we shouldn’t expect to see it next year.

Digital Foundry also speculates that Nintendo is “afraid” of switching from Switch to its next system. It’s a reasonable assumption, given that Nintendo went from thriving (with the Wii) to thriving (with the Wii U) and back again with the Switch, but you’d think the company would have been smart enough to stick with the hybrid approach, given that it’s proven itself so successfully it’s in Indeed its own position. But who knows?
