Hibatullah Akunzada, the Taliban’s top leader, has ordered that women be allowed to enter public places in Afghanistan only to cover their faces. Violation of the order carries a prison sentence for the girl’s father or the girl’s parents and, if available, a dismissal from the government job. The burqa was mandatory during the Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001. The Taliban claimed that the blue burqa used by women during this period was the most desirable. In most parts of Afghanistan, women come out wearing religious headscarves. But in places like Kabul, the situation is different.

Girls’ education almost came to a standstill when the Taliban came to power. This is followed by the new order. The Taliban recently issued an order denying girls high school education. With this, the Western countries had lifted the embargo.
