At the extraordinary meeting of the LIZDA council on Wednesday, it became known that 30 million euros will be allocated for the salary increase of teachers next year. This means that from January 1, 2025, the salary of teachers will increase by 2.6%.

The expected salary increase is 5.9 percentage points lower than the salary schedule for educators. Accordingly, the salary rate for teachers should increase to 10.35 euros per working hour from January.

The union is ready to make concessions to such changes if there is clarity about the next steps of the teachers’ salary schedule. A discussion on this is planned for October 2, when LIZDA will meet with policy makers. The agreement must be reached by the time the 2025 budget project is submitted to the Saeima.

“We want to ensure that there is a principle of justice. If there is a salary increase in municipal and state institutions, no matter how much, so that the same principles apply to teachers at all levels of education,” said Vanaga.

LIZDA proposes to apply to teachers the basic monthly salary principle, which is applied to those employed in state and local government institutions.

LIZDA Council has decided not to carry out any active protest actions for the time being.

Finance Minister Arvils Asheradens (JV) has refrained from assessing whether it will be possible to fulfill the teachers’ salary schedule in the near future. Greater clarity could be in the middle of next year, the politician made such a prediction to journalists.

At the beginning of the year, the lowest hourly rate for preschool, general education and vocational education teachers increased to 9.54 euros.
