Only Steven Spielberg’s films took more in total, but he also needed significantly more titles to do so. James Cameron, who celebrates his 70th birthday this Friday, is Hollywood’s most commercially successful director of all time, almost synonymous with the term blockbuster. He directed three of the six highest-grossing films: both parts of the sci-fi film Avatar and the drama Titanic.

Do not underestimate

Throughout his career, his films have surpassed themselves at the top of the box office charts. Before the superhero machinery of the Marvel studio got into full swing, James Cameron was alone at the helm with Titanic and Avatar for a long time.

Yet at least in his later career, this Canadian native and pioneer of modern technology is both a curious relic and a solitaire, not the best at some imaginary Hollywood game of success, but rather playing his own game somewhat in defiance of Hollywood. He shoots projects that are often ridiculed and condemned in advance, but then turn into an event that everyone wants to see.
