The analyst of the JATO Dynamics agency Filipe Muñoz collected data on the sales of new cars in all countries of the world. For the first time in history, an electric car is number 1.
The leader in 2023 is the Tesla Model Y. Sales of the American car last year jumped by as much as 63 percent to reach 1.223 million units. The electric crossover went into production in 2020 and has since performed strongly in most key markets. It is the first bestseller on the European market that does not leave the Old Continent.
In 2023, Toyota RAV4 sold over one million copies again: 59,500 more, reaching 1,075,200 cars. This is a positive sign for Toyota, as in the previous two years sales of the crossover had declined by 10%.
In third place in the world in terms of sales is the Honda CR-V with 846 thousand units (+ 15%). The crossover of the Japanese company of the sixth generation is an example of a truly global car. The model is assembled in ten factories in different parts of the world (hybrid crossovers for Europe are supplied from China). The model underwent a generation change right in the second half of 2022, so it is not surprising that sales increased by 15%, returning the CR-V to the third place in the ranking, which the crossover occupied in 2021.
