BOLZANO. He suddenly passed away Max Bertoldia teacher and scholar of the theater, a theater critic for our newspaper for years. He was 66 years old. Sunday, September 1st would have been his official first day of retirement, and instead not even the most unpredictable of the theater plots he was involved with could have predicted his sudden death the evening before retirement, on Saturday night.
At just 66 years old, without a health problem. One of his passions was football and that evening he had gone punctually – he was a season ticket holder for home matches – to cheer on the Südtirol team playing against Brescia. At the end of the match he said goodbye to his friends, got on his city bike and headed home, in the historic center of Bolzano. An illness – the causes have not yet been ascertained – struck him, without warning, on the road. Passers-by found him lifeless, right in front of the entrance to his house. The attempts of the rescuers, on site and in the hospital, were in vain. The family only found out the next day, when his wife received the news when his cell phone found signal again, after a night in an isolated mountain refuge. Mariaclara Pagano, his wife, who has also worked in the theatre by directing the Fondazione del Teatro Comunale for several years, now has at her side her two sons Davide and Alessio who have hastily returned from Vienna where they live and where they studied.
Along with the pain of such a sudden and unexpected death, Massimo Bertoldi leaves in the many friends and acquaintances who mourn him, many different “voids”: with many he had shared his passion for theater, with others his passion for soccer, with others still his passion for rock music, the tough kind. On the other hand, his passion for mushroom picking was solitary.
Bertoldi will also leave regrets in the many children of the middle school in Laives where he taught literary subjects for many years.
