The residents of Piedrabuena Street, in the Almirante Brown district, suffer the ravages of a problem that has worsened for decades: the adverse effects of banana trees, both on health and on houses and sidewalks.

According to the claim that reached TN and the people, the residents of the José Mármol neighborhood have asked the Municipality countless times to prune the trees, which can reach between 15 and 20 meters. The roots broke the sidewalks, they are breaking the water and gas pipes. The branches also became entangled with the electrical wiring, and the fruits cover the shingles, break the roofs and water enters the houses.

People and pets have developed health problems. “We have many elderly and non-elderly neighbors for whom they cause many health problems,” claimed the complainant, who preferred to remain anonymous. The situation worsens during the spring, since the pollen sickens “little children, babies, big people, animals too, who drown,” he said and added: “My daughters suffer from asthma, allergies and bronchospasms, all of this is related to the pollen”. A neighbor’s dog even drowned after suffering several complications from the dust from the trees.

Approximately 400 houses in the neighborhood have these damages and the neighbors have complained to the Municipality, but they have never been given a favorable response. “What they say is that, by ordinance, each front owner, each neighbor has to be responsible and the truth is that that is a shame. We already take care of private health, private education, and private security as well. We all pay because the State does not provide it appropriately and now, also, the pruning of trees,” he noted.

Currently, pruning a single tree “costs $20,000 and extracting it from the roots, $80,000,” and each house has one or two trees in front, a budget that is impossible for the neighbors to pay: “This is a neighborhood of humble people who have nothing left over.” , the complainant insisted.

According to the complainant, the neighbors’ complaints have intensified, and they only received a promise from the municipal delegate: They said that, perhaps, within a few weeks, they could coordinate a meeting.
