Mohamed Bazoum’s week was to be placed under the sign of modernization. Tuesday, July 25, the President of Niger inaugurated with great fanfare the launch of road renovation works in Niamey. Around him, the soldiers in brown berets of the presidential guard ensure his safety. It is this same brown beret that wears General Tchiani, commander of the presidential guard, on Friday July 28, when he proclaims the suspension of the Seventh Republic, and the concentration of executive and legislative powers in the hands of the National Council for the safeguarding the homeland (CNSP) created two days earlier.

It took three days for Niger to go from being the bridgehead of democracy in the Sahel to being the last domino in a series of coups…
