Conakry, December 21, 2023 – The fire at the Kaloum hydrocarbon depot is under control; the last sources of flames are being extinguished but the area remains extremely dangerous and closed to all members of the public.

The government congratulates all the national and foreign actors whose professional and heroic intervention made it possible to contain the disaster. For all victims of the fire, free medical care continues. Of 241 injured, 167 have returned to their families, 74 people are still hospitalized.

To date, we deplore 23 cases of death including 16 bodies, of which 10 cases have not yet been identified. Numerous reports indicate a significant number of missing people. Clarification investigations are underway.

Health and environmental services are reporting a spread of suspended particles causing respiratory, hearing, vision and headache problems among people consulted. These patients are treated immediately in our specialized health structures.

In terms of material damage, buildings in the impacted area are weakened and present risks for residents.

The disaster assessment commission has started inventorying the physical damage caused by the explosion.

Also, the latest census carried out by a mixed team of social services counted around 1,100 households affected and supported.

To the united and resilient people of Guinea, the President of the Republic, Head of State, HE Colonel Mamadi DOUMBOUYA, sends his sincere condolences and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.

He expresses his gratitude to the populations and Governments of friendly countries for their mobilization and support for Guinea during this ordeal. In view of the worrying findings on the health, environmental and security situation presented above, the following provisions and recommendations are formulated:

1) Wearing a mask is compulsory in the commune of Kaloum;

2) Evacuees must not return to their homes until further notice;

3) The supply of diesel to populations throughout the national territory continues;

4) The movement of tankers is subject to a secure escort and a mission order;

5) The area affected by the disaster remains closed to the public, for security and investigation reasons, with the exception of specialized services;

6) For better coordination in the delivery of donations and contributions, a press release will be issued to this effect.

The Government is continuing its efforts to make gasoline available as soon as possible. He invites people to understand, be civic-minded and collaborate in the management of this tragedy.

Following the message from the Head of State, the Government invites the population to continue to maintain serenity and calm, and discipline by respecting the instructions and directives. We are actively working to return activities to normal, including in the commune of Kaloum.
