According to the report of the Romanian National Emergency Situations Inspectorate (IGSU) on Sunday, over the weekend more than 3,700 military firefighters were on standby to help those in trouble after several counties of Transylvania had a third-degree, red-signal storm alert in effect.

At the national level, a total of 51 people had to be evacuated – some of them resettled, others rescued – from the river, and the authorities housed them in boarding houses.

In addition to several Transylvanian counties – Fehér, Arad, Bihar, Hunyad, Máramaros, Maros and Temes – the rescue units also had to help settlements in southern Romania and Moldavia, after swollen rivers and streams flooded houses and yards following the sudden downpour. The trees that fell in the strong wind damaged the roofs of buildings and cars. In twenty-six counties, including almost all counties of Transylvania, the operational councils of the emergency inspectorates were convened.

Rainfall caused by thunderstorms accompanied by strong gusts of wind damaged four national roads in Fehér, Bihar and Hunyad counties.

Mountain rescuers rescued a group of 25 tourists from a flooded stream in Remete (Rimet) settlement in Fehér county.

Three settlements in Hunyad county – Valár (Valari), Aranyos (Aranies) and Ulm – were isolated by the flooded rivers. Hunyad county prefecture announced that it is in constant contact with the affected settlements, and that the infrastructure is being made usable in the first round. In addition to the firefighters of the military, the gendarmerie is also on standby.

In Romania, the national meteorological service issued a first- and second-degree alert for 36 counties of the country on Sunday, the second-degree alert valid until Monday morning applies mainly to counties in Transylvania. A first- and second-degree flood warning was issued for the rivers in the region, which is also valid until Monday.
