The treasure trove of data is in the workshop

by time news

Angelo Castellari used to have to walk through the extensive factory building in the Derendorf district in the north of Düsseldorf to the shelves to compare the numbers in his lists with those stuck to the generators, interior mirrors or front axle shafts that were delivered. Today he reads the barcode of every incoming and outgoing part with an orange handheld scanner. “This way I can process several orders at the same time,” he says. For two years, Mercedes-Benz Vans has been using this intelligent data glove in its Düsseldorf plant, where 150,000 delivery vans are manufactured every year and around 300 million components are moved. Software collects and analyzes the work steps of Castellari and his colleagues. How many parts does someone store in an hour? Where does he stand? “In this way, we arrange the containers in such a way that a picker no longer has to bend down,” says Marc-Oliver Nandy, who heads production logistics at Mercedes-Benz Vans.
