Former Comptroller Carlos Pólit faces charges of conspiracy to launder money, money laundering and participating in transactions with assets derived from crimes. The trial will last about three weeks.
Former comptroller Carlos Pólit will face trial in the United States, after he did not accept his guilt in an investigation by the Department of Justice of that country.
According to the calendar of the Southern District Court of Florida, the trial will begin on April 8, 2024.
Carlos Pólit faces three charges in Miami: conspiracy to launder money, money laundering and participating in transactions with assets derived from crimes.
The case investigates at least three corruption schemes in which the former comptroller participated in the United States:
Bribes received from the multinational Odebrecht, a case for which he has already been sentenced in Ecuador.
Bribes related to Seguros Sucre.
Possible payments received from a Spanish tuna company.
U.S. prosecutors accuse Pólit of more than $8 million in bribes for these three schemes. To receive them, the former comptroller would have used accounts in the state of Florida in the name of his son, John Pólit, the main co-conspirator detected in the investigation.
Before the trial, a jury must be selected to participate in the trial. This group of people are the ones who, after listening to the testimonies and analyzing the evidence, must decide whether Pólit is declared guilty or innocent.
The case is being heard before District Judge Kathleen M. Williams of the Southern District Court of Florida. The magistrate will be the one to direct the trial, which begins next Monday and is expected to last about three weeks.
