Inside a specially designed area of a truck, in a crypt that barely allowed them, two young Iraqis were spotted at the entrance gate of the external port of Igoumenitsa on Wednesday evening, by officers of the Central Port Authority of Igoumenitsa.
The identification of the two irregular immigrants, who intended to leave the country illegally, was made after the use of information from the foreign service Department of Homeland Security/Homeland Security Investigations Athens and in the context of a wide operation coordinated by the Maritime Border Protection Directorate of the Headquarters of the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard.
Initially, I.X.E. was placed under discretionary surveillance. car driven by a 52-year-old foreigner, who, starting from Athens, arrived in Trikala, where he picked up two foreigners, aged 26 and 23, and took them to a house where a 48-year-old Greek lives. A truck with a 48-year-old driver went to the spot, who together with the 52-year-old put the other two people in the truck and hid them in a crypt, where they were spotted upon their arrival in Igoumenitsa and arrested, as they lacked legal travel documents.
The driver of the truck was also arrested, while, following discreet surveillance, the 52-year-old driver of the I.X.E. was located and arrested. at the toll station of the Rio-Antirio Bridge by officers of the Port Authority of Patras. The truck and the I.X.E. were seized. vehicle, six mobile telephone devices and the sum of 850 euros.
The two Iraqis, as emerged from the preliminary investigation, had paid the sum of 7,000 euros each for their transport from Greece to Italy.
In order to investigate the case, the Maritime Border Protection Directorate is collecting, analyzing and processing the evidence and data so far, investigating the possible participation of other accomplices involved. At the same time, the participation of those arrested in other cases of illegal immigrant trafficking is examined, as well as their possible cooperation with other members of organized circles, of the same or similar criminal activity.
