The Trump Organization was convicted of tax fraud in a Manhattan court. Former US President Donald Trump’s company was accused of masterminding a scheme to allow its top managers to evade taxes on a range of benefits they received, such as housing and luxury cars.
The guilty verdict came after two days of deliberation, at the end of an investigation that lasted three years. The head of finance of the tycoon’s holding company, Allen Weisselberg, had pleaded guilty to having masterminded the tax evasion system, implemented over a period of 15 years, and had been sentenced to 5 months in prison.
After today’s verdict, the Trump Organization could be fined up to $1.6 million. Former President Trump has called the proceedings a witch hunt carried out by his Democratic political opponents. He and his children were not in the dock but it is a verdict that will have serious effects on the image of the whole family and on the company’s relations with banks and lending institutions.
