The Tunisian Justice detains two judges disqualified by Kais Saied

The Tunisian Justice has ordered this Sunday the arrest of the former president of the Court of Cassation Tayeb Ras and the former prosecutor of the first instance of the capital Al Bashir al Akrami, accusing both of having committed crimes of corruption.

The two judges, who were disqualified in August along with 50 other magistrates by decree of the Tunisian president, Kais Saied -accused by his detractors of abusing his authority to try to control the judicial system at all costs-, as he has learned the Mosaique FM station.

The former president of the Court of Cassation has been arrested by order of the Prosecutor’s Office based on judicial proceedings published against him by the Tunisian Justice regarding an alleged file related to suspicions of corruption.

Meanwhile, the former first instance prosecutor has been arrested in compliance with the instructions ordered by another first instance prosecutor in the city of Tunis, according to the aforementioned station, for mishandling an alleged file related to the murder of politician Chokri Belaid. , leader of the United Democratic Patriotic Movement, a Marxist and pan-Arab force.

Belaid led a campaign of denunciations against the alleged complicity of the Islamist party Ennahda and the Leagues for the Defense of the Revolution, which some opponents describe as the armed wing of the Islamist movement.

In June 2022, the president accused nearly 60 judges whom he accuses of being involved in corruption cases and even providing protection to terrorism suspects, within the framework of the measures adopted since he dissolved the Government in July 2021 and suspended Parliament to arrogate all powers.

Following this, the Tunisian Administrative Court restored to their respective posts in August some 50 judges expelled by a decree by Kais Saied, whom his detractors have accused of abusing his authority to try to control the judicial system at all costs.
