In 2019, the Turkish-Persian “Gojalar ölmez” (The Village of the Immortals), shot in Iran’s Azerbaijan, is showing on big screens in different cities of Iran.

Comedy-drama genre “Old people are immortal” is director Rza Jamali’s first feature film. The film, shot in Ardabil province, depicts the story of old men waiting to die in a village where no one has died for years.

The film, which was awarded the “Soul of Asia” award of the Tokyo Film Festival, was screened at Tehran’s Art and Experience Cinema on Saturday. The film is also released on Monday in Ardabil and on Wednesday in Tabriz.

According to Mehr news agency, “this film was shot entirely in the villages of Ardabil and the main language is Turkish. In some scenes of the film, there are dialogues in Persian, but most of the dialogues are in Turkish.”

The director and screenwriter of the film, Rza Jamali, received awards from many international festivals he participated in with his short films in the past years. Nadir Mehdili, Hamdullah Salimi, Salman Abbasi, Elena Azarm, Nida Hagshinas and Vilayat Khubdil starred in the movie Village of the Immortals.

The film was shown in 2020 on the Turkish state television TRT.

In the past few years, Turkish films shot in Iran-Azerbaijan have met with wide sympathy and applause from film critics in Turkey as well as in Iran. Reza Siyami, who was previously interviewed by Voice of America, believes that “in recent years, Turkish film production in Iran has progressed faster and stronger than expected.”
