The two Spains: almost 90% of Basque municipalities are rich and more than 83% of Andalusia are poor

According to Household Income Distribution Atlas (ADRH)which provides indicators of the level and distribution of income per person and household, Spain is clearly divided into two parts: north and south. The first is crowded, almost in its majority, by municipalities with high and medium-high incomes; in the second, the low and medium-low.

The community with the highest percentage of ‘rich’ municipalities is the Basque Country, with 88.8%. Behind, Catalonia, with 49.1%, and the Community of Madrid, with 36.9%. For its part, Andalusia, is at the head in ‘poor’ localities. 83.3% of its municipalities are among the 25% of municipalities with the lowest income. Extremadura follows very closely, with 83%.

Regarding province capitalsthose with a higher percentage of census tracts with very high average annual net income per inhabitant (above the last income decile) are San Sebastián (57.6%), Girona (41.0%) and Madrid (39.8 %).

For their part, the provincial capitals with the highest percentage of sections with very low average annual net income per inhabitant (below the first income decile) are Melilla (31.8%), Ceuta (25.0%) and Alicante. (22.9%).

Likewise, Guipúzcoa leads the list for annual revenue provinces, with 16,399 euros of average annual net income per inhabitant, ahead of Madrid, with 15,579 euros, and Vizcaya, with 15,555 euros. The provinces with the lowest annual income per inhabitant are Almería (with 9,709 euros of net income), Jaén (9,958) and Badajoz (10,001 euros).

Of the Spanish municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants, continues the INE, the three with the highest average annual net income per inhabitant in 2020 were Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), with 26,009 euros, Matadepera (Barcelona), with 22,806 euros, and Boadilla del Monte (Madrid), with 22,224 euros. Those with the lowest average annual net income per inhabitant were El Palmar de Troya (Seville), with 6,785 euros, Iznalloz (Granada), with 7,036 euros, and Albuñol (Granada), with 7,061 euros.
