The man was held criminally responsible for knowingly providing five illegal migrants from Afghanistan with the opportunity to illegally stay in Latvia for greedy purposes.

According to the indictment, the man agreed to go to Latvia and pick up illegal migrants in his car following the offer of an unknown person who was not identified in the pre-trial criminal proceedings. He was promised to pay 1500 US dollars for each transported person.

The accused arrived in Daugavpils by car, where he received five Afghan citizens without valid visas and residence permits, and drove the car with the migrants in it to Jēkabpils district, where the vehicle was stopped by the State Police.

The Zemgale District Court, considering the case on appeal, left unchanged the part of the 2023 judgment of the Zemgale District Court, which sentenced the man to actual deprivation of liberty for two years and, as an additional punishment, determined his deportation from Latvia after serving the prison sentence, imposing an entry ban for five years.

The prosecutor is satisfied with the decision of the appellate court, therefore no protest will be submitted.

The judgment has not yet entered into force, it is possible to appeal it in the cassation procedure.
